Chapter 1

                        A Childhood Spent in Porthleven

I enjoy all the photos and comments on Nostalgic Memories, and other
similar Facebook sites.

The photos bring back loving memories of my childhood and my life spent
in Cornwall, and my home in Porthleven. The memory of life with my
father, grandparents will never leave my mind (which is a blessing).

My thoughts often drift back to the happy times spent in Porthleven.
Playing on the beach in the summer. In the winter being woke up my father
saying, ‘get up boy, there's is wood on the beach’. The wind would be
coming from the southwest corner, straight into the bay. Down to the beach
we would go. Sometimes it would be just dad and myself. Many times there
would be others on the beach, but more often than not a man called Buller
would be down there before us. I know Buller has long passed but I can still
picture him wading out into the sea to claim the wood before anyone else. I
can recall throwing the wood up pass the high water mark. No one would
lay claim to it then, (I’m not sure that would be the case today).

We would not go past Blue Boy because of the distance of bring the wood
back to the back yard at Trewarvas. There it would be stacked to dry before
it was cut up to be burned on the fire.

Other memories of Porthleven - coasters coming into the harbor full of coal.
The fishing fleet, the fishermen. Cecil Hoskins owner of the Provider. The
crane on the quay. Lowering and raising the bulk with 6 or more men, all
done by hand.

Carolaire, St Peters Tide, Mr Edward’s paper shop, Urnes ice cream, lost
friends and much more, there are many stories and nostalgic memories for
me.
