Page 34 - recollections of a life in Porthleven
P. 34
He asked me if I would like to go for a stroll around the harbour and
reminisce again. I reminded him we had already talked about the past when
we first met. He told me about how the harbour, fishing fleet, fishing gear,
stores and loft had changed and the ship yard was no more.
I told him of the changes to the village and our county I have witnessed in
my lifetime. Changes that he and I don't like or agree with. Newcomers will
keep changing the lifestyles in our villages and county. But, should we live
in the past? Should we accept that our past is the foundation for our present
and future?
I think I must have shocked The Spirit with my comments as he replied,
'Well well Johnny, you found your voice, you hardily said a word the last
time we met! I reminded him he hadn't given me many opportunities to share
my thoughts previously.
After thinking for a while he said,' Well Johnny, I preferred the past so I will
continue to live in the past. With that he raised his hand, smiled and faded
away.
Whose funeral was it?
I have many more stories in my head I will never forget. Some of great
enjoyment and some of great sorrow. There are two very important people
who I have not written about. They are my father and my grandmother (who
was our second mother).
