Page 32 - recollections of a life in Porthleven
P. 32

'Johnny, the sun is rising fast, let's walk back towards the square and I will
make my way back.'
As we walked towards the square he spoke some more and he had tears in
his eyes. He told me how upset he was when he saw all the changes to his
village, and to his county. Seeing Cornish men being forced to leave their
homes to seek work elsewhere. I reminded him there were Cornish miners
all over the world.
'Yes', he replied, 'but there are no better mines than those in Cornwall.'

We reached the square, I held out my hand to shake his. He smiled and
wished me luck. He then turned and walked up the street towards the church.
He glanced back and waved to me and slowly faded away into the morning
mist and rising sun............... The Spirit of Porthleven .......…
