CHARLES (CARLI ZTEMANN
1885 - 1941
This display is on loan from the Ziemann family from Ponhleven.
Charles Ziemann was a well known marine enqineer who
Travelled extensively world wide.
He came to Porthleven to install the Bolinger diesel engines in two
ships for the Hudson Bay Company of Canada and sailed with
them when completed.
The delivery of the ship "The Fort Churchill" in September 1913,
was followed in August 1914 with the delivery of the ship "The
Fort York" to the York Factory in the far north of Canada; both
ships had been built in Ponhleven and registered in Falmouth.
The Winnipeg News Bulletin dated Saturday 17lh January 1914
quoted that "Mr Ziemann accompanied by an lndian guide and
three lndian dog sled drivers to which were hitched five huskies
had Ieft York Factory on December 1sth arriving in Winnipeg on
January 15th having slept, ate and actually lived in the snow for
the whole month".
Charles Ziemann brought back home the artifacts displayed:
A pair of Eskimo (lnuits) boots
A sea lion tooth
Two walrus tusks
Charles being armed with a camera was able to take the
photographs shown here, some of them include himself.
He then made his home in Porthleven having married Elsie
Holloway, native of the village.
