Spirit of Porthleven Art Competition
Second year 2012
Artists, friends and family gathered in the Lifeboat Art Studio on Mon evening to hear the winners announced and enjoy a glass of Pimms.
The spirit of Porthleven has been summed up in art form thanks to an exhibition of work by both professionals and keen amateur artists.
Taking place in the Art Studio, on the edge of the outer harbour (below the Ship Inn),
the Spirit of Porthleven Art Competition is in its second year.
Organisers Damelza Storbeck and Rosie Hughes said the competition had really captured people’s imagination, because it was not just about the artist’s skill but their ability to interpret the ‘spirit’ of the location.
The three judges, Dan Allen – head of art at Bath Spa University – distinguished artist Daphne McClure and painter Jane Scott, each brought a different perspective to the difficult task of selecting just five winners from what Daphne described as “an extremely high standard of entry.”
Hilary Wilson’s watercolour called Loe Bar Moods was the painting that they all agreed had most successfully captured the unique atmosphere of Loe Bar, winning her first prize.
Second prize was awarded to Hannah Minson for her collage showing the slipway to the beach, with third prize going to a very surprised Margaret Jones for her watercolour of Institute Hill.
Highly commended certificates were presented to David Roxburgh for Fishermen’s Friend and Sonia Sjoholm for Sun and Silt.
Several paintings were sold on the night as visitors seized the opportunity to buy an original art work at a reasonable price. The exhibition will now run until July 26, from 10am until 4pm daily. The event is sponsored by The Osborne Charitable Trust, with profits going to Cornwall Air Ambulance.
