Porthleven Torchlight Procession 2019

As dusk fell last night Porthleven was lit by the flickering flames of more than 1,000 torchlights.

Porthleven Torchlight Procession has become one of the most popular ways to mark the end of the August Bank Holiday in the Helston and Lizard area and this year was no exception.

A brief spell of rain earlier in the evening dried up in time for the start of the procession, as people gathered at the Harbour Head from 8pm ready for the parade to get moving at 8.20pm, to make its way around the port.

Porthleven Community Group, which organises the event, said afterwards: "Huge thanks to everyone who turned out for the torchlight procession - you all make the event what it is. It was absolutely fantastic.

"Special thanks to Porthleven Town Band, the mayor and town councillors, the town warden, the Harbour Inn, Suzie at Four Crows Gallery, Cober Valley Rotary Club and Falmouth University students for their invaluable help with marshalling and torch sales - and community group members who put a huge amount of time and effort into organising the event."

Among those taking part in the parade was Porthleven mayor Bev Plunkett, who said she was "proud" to lead it alongside Porthleven Town Band and its musical director Tom Bassett.

She said: "Special thanks go to the incredible Porthleven Community Group, as without them this wonderful event probably wouldn’t actually go ahead - they work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure both locals and visitors have a safe and enjoyable time.

"However it would not have been such a success once again without the organisation and support of our each and every one of our wonderful marshals and helpers - and of course many, many thanks to Porthleven Town Band who were absolutely tremendous, both at the parade and afterwards outside the Harbour Inn."

The procession died out for a number of years before being revived by Porthleven Community Group in 2013. However, it is believed to originally date back in various form to around 1948.
