STRIKE, Francis / Fanny and her grandson Norman Henry DURSTON in Australia

Many adventurous Porthleveners set off to far-flung parts of the world.

One brave young woman was Frances (Fanny) STRIKE born in 1831, the daughter of tin miner John STRIKE and his wife Eleanor.

In 1854 she sailed from Plymouth on the 1060 ton ship "Parsee", on an assisted voyage to Melbourne. The records state that she was to be employed by P Stevenson for £25 for the term of 3 months.

She left her son Thomas Alfred STRIKE behind with her parents but went on to marry Henry DURSTON in 1855 and have 8 children with him between 1856 and 1870.

Unfortunately 3 of the children died, one at 14 days, one at 5 and one at 16 years.
She had at least 9 grandchildren one of whom was
Norman Henry DUSTON who died aged 22 at Gallipoli in the "Great War". (First World War).
