156 TWINNIE MITCHELLS Farmer brothers Andrew and William Mitchell,
bachelors who retired to a house in Wellington Road after 50 years of farmingtogether. Celebrated their 80th birthday living in the village and could be found at Helston Cattle Market every Monday. They dressed exactly alike, looked alike and moved at the same time and in the same direction. They were always well groomed and sported moustaches and bowler hats and often wore shoe spats. Conversation was one of their strong attributes and they were often the targets of the visitors.
Pretty girls were always welcomed!

160 William Bickford-Smith (1827 – 24 February 1899) was an English fuse manufacturer and a Liberal and Liberal Unionist politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1885 to 1892.

He was the son of George Smith of Truro and his wife Elizabeth Hurral Bickford.

He was educated at Saltash and Plymouth. His grandfather William Bickford had developed a method of making mining fuses using rope which was safer than previous methods and with Smith's father had established a factory at Tuckingmill, Cornwall. Smith became a partner in his father's firm of Bickford, Smith, & Co. and lived near the factory at Camborne. There was another factory at St. Helen's Junction, Lancashire, and Smith was also chairman of Helston Railway. He was also captain in the 15th Cornwall Rifle Volunteers and J.P. for Cornwall.

In 1868, he took the additional surname of Bickford, when he inherited the property of his maternal grandfather.
Bickford-Smith purchased the Trevarno Estate, at Helston, Cornwall in 1874 and set about developing the gardens.

Porthleven; the Bickford-Smith Institute, with its imposing 70 ft clock tower, was built in 1883 as a literary institute by William Bickford-Smith of Trevarno
In 1882 he funded the construction of the Bickford-Smith Institute and clock tower at Porthleven which was built as a scientific and literary institute including a lending and reference library.

Bickford-Smith was elected at the 1885 general election as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Truro. In 1886 he was re-elected as a Liberal Unionist and held the seat until he stood down at the 1892 general election.

Bickford-Smith married Margaret Leaman Venning in 1852. After her death he married Anna Matilda Bond. They were staunch Methodists. He died at the age of 71, in 1899. His son was the barrister and antiquary Roandeau Albert Henry Bickford-Smith. Twin sons were born on 24 December 1881 at Trevarno.

Capt. Townsend, Lieut. Durston and 25 men, of which witness was one, made the charge during which he saw Mr. Durston fall badly wounded. He was carried down and witness was told that he had died the same night on a hospital ship" (Pt. H. P. Wilson, 157) "Lt. Durston was sent by Col. Cannon of the 15 Batt. in company of witness to establish communications with a captured Turkish trench. As he got there, he was shot through both legs. He was left in the trench in an impossible position owing to the Turks being able to enfilade and bomb them. Witness was the last man to see him alive and when he had to leave the trench to get ammunition which was running short he laid Lieut. Durston comfortably on the ground". (Harwood, Captain, A.I.F).
Notes : Durston's parents married in 1884 [?1889?], and by 1893 were living with Sidney's brother, Henry at 126 Clarke Street, Northcote (just east of the railway gates)
before moving to Poowong in Gippsland.
A brother Sidney (1891) was also born in Northcote.
Raymond (1897[actually 26 Jul 1899]),
Beryl (1896) and
Vera (1906) were born in Poowong. Sidney senior was listed as a grazier, but at time of his son’s death, the family also had a property at 91 Tennyson Street, St. Kilda.
Henry senior died in 1903, the Clarke Street address in 1904 then appearing under the name of Frank Durston, thought to be Henry's son - a Death Notice showed Henry as having three nephews, Frank, Nellie and Emma at 106 Clarke Street, possibly the same house after re-numbering. Of the brothers, Sidney and Raymond also enlisted suggesting 91 Ackland Street, St. Kilda. Durston passed the Military Staff Clerk's examination in February, 1911 and was employed at District Headquarters, Melbourne until March, 1912 when he was appointed to the Royal Military College at Duntroon The official history of Australia's participation in the Great War suggests that Durston was a graduate of the College. He gave his occupation on embarkation as "C.M.F" (Citizen's Military Forces) and was one of the few professional soldiers in our archives. Durston was killed in a raid at Quinn's Post on 9 May, 1915, the attack mentioned at length in the official history. That he died of wounds is not open to question, but other reports suggest Durston was buried in a beach cemetery, perhaps casting doubt as to whether he made it to the hospital ship.
